WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
A DSG & S-TRONIC TRANSMISSION?
It is essentially the same direct-shift transmission with a few slight differences. Simply put, Volkswagen prefers to use DSG name while Audi uses the S-Tronic name. Vehicles from these manufacturers are equipped with various configurations of transmissions and mechatronics units depending on the model variant, which is why the mechatronics control unit is not interchangeable but always car specific.
S-TRONIC
GEARBOX MODELS
DQ200 (0AM/0CW) 7 SPEED - DRY CLUTCH
The DQ200 is the first and only 7-speed DSG to make use of a dry clutch setup. These gearboxes are known to have issues including mechatronics, flywheel, and clutch problems. The most common issue we see at Geartronix DSG Centre is excessive clutch wear. This gearbox can be found in the Polo GTi, Polo TSI, Jetta TSI, Jetta TDI, Passat, and the Golf Mk6 Cabriolet
DQ200 (0AM/0CW) 7 SPEED WITH DRY CLUTCH
The DQ200 is the only 7-speed S-Tronic gearbox to make use of a dry clutch setup. These gearboxes are known to have issues including mechatronics, flywheel, and clutch problems with excessive clutch wear. This gearbox can be found in many A-series Audi models
DQ250 (02E/0D9) 6-SPEED WITH WET CLUTCH
The DQ250 gearbox, also known as the 0D9, is the first widely used S-Tronic gearbox from Audi. The DQ250 was released nearly 20 years ago and is still in use today with changes over that time. This gearbox has a reputation of being strong and reliable. This gearbox can be found in some 2.0 front-wheel drive models as well as the 3.2 V6 Quattro.
DQ381 7-SPEED WITH WET CLUTCH
The DQ381 in Audi is an all-wheel drive version that’s been used since 2017. This gearbox is found in a few Audi models, including the A3, the S3 and the TTS.
DQ381 7-SPEED WITH WET CLUTCH
The DQ381 is the all-wheel drive version of the DQ380. We’ve seen this gearbox in use since 2017, deployed worldwide. This gearbox is found in a few Volkswagen models, most notably the Golf Mk7.5 R.
DQ400 6-SPEED HYBRID
This 6-speed transmission has a modified clutch housing to create extra space to allow for the fitment of hybrid-electric motor. The gearbox is part and parcel of the 1.4 TSI engine and is found in the Audi A3 E-Tron.
DL501(OB5) 7 SPEED WITH WET CLUTCH
The DL501 is the strongest S-Tronic gearbox on the market. Audi designed this gearbox to handle up to 1000Nm of torque at an engine speed of 10 000rpm, which gives the impression of a faultless setup. In fact, the DL501 has many documented issues, especially on gearboxes produced between 2009 and 2013. These issues are fixable, and after some in-house modifications Geartronix DSG Centre can transform these gearboxes to be problem-free. The DL501 can be found in the many models like the Audi A4; A5; Q5; A6; A7; S4; S5; RS4 and S6.
