WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
A DSG & S-TRONIC TRANSMISSION?
It is essentially the same direct-shift transmission with a few slight differences. Simply put, Volkswagen prefers to use DSG name while Audi uses the S-Tronic name. Vehicles from these manufacturers are equipped with various configurations of transmissions and mechatronics units depending on the model variant, which is why the mechatronics control unit is not interchangeable but always car specific.
DSG GEARBOX CONFIGURATIONS
DQ200 (0AM/0CW) 7 SPEED - DRY CLUTCH
The DQ200 is the first and only 7-speed DSG to make use of a dry clutch setup. These gearboxes are known to have issues including mechatronics, flywheel, and clutch problems. The most common issue we see at Geartronix DSG Centre is excessive clutch wear. This gearbox can be found in the Polo GTi, Polo TSI, Jetta TSI, Jetta TDI, Passat, and the Golf Mk6 Cabriolet

DQ250 (02E/0D9) 6-SPEED WITH WET CLUTCH
The DQ250 gearbox, also known as the 02E, is the first DSG gearbox from Volkswagen. The DQ250 was released in 2003 and is still in use today and has had minimal changes in that time. This gearbox has a reputation of being strong and reliable. This gearbox can be found in the Golf Mk5 GTi, Golf Mk6 GTi, Golf Mk7 GTi.
DQ380 7-SPEED WITH WET CLUTCH
Also known for its strength and reliability is the DQ380 gearbox. This gearbox is a smaller version of the strongest DQ500 gearbox. Volkswagen models making use of this gearbox include the Golf Mk7.5 GTI.
DQ381 7-SPEED WITH WET CLUTCH
The DQ381 is the all-wheel drive version of the DQ380. We’ve seen this gearbox in use since 2017, deployed worldwide. This gearbox is found in a few Volkswagen models, most notably the Golf Mk7.5 R.

DQ400 6-SPEED HYBRID
This 6-speed transmission has a modified clutch housing to create extra space to allow for the fitment of hybrid-electric motor. The gearbox is part and parcel of the 1.4 TSI engine. Common Volkswagen models with this gearbox include Golf 7 GTE, as well as the Audi A3 E-Tron.
DQ500 (0BH/0BT) 7 SPEED WITH WET CLUTCH
Volkswagen’s DQ500 gearbox is the strongest transversal DSG in production which is why it’s found in the bigger all-wheel drive models like the T5 busses and the Tiguan. The size of the gearbox and its components means this is normally the most expensive to repair.
